United Nations Removes Sanctions on President of Syria Prior to Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit next week.
He became interim leader following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in winter 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of domestic strife.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" since Assad was deposed.
He had been subject to global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."
Upcoming White House Meeting
The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.
