UN Council Endorses the US Gaza Strip Peace Plan

The global body has voted to endorse measures presented by Donald Trump for securing a long-term stability in Gaza, encompassing the deployment of an global peacekeeping force and a eventual route to a independent Palestine.

Unanimous Support with Key Absent Votes

This measure was adopted by a tally of thirteen in favor, with Russia and China abstaining. The US envoy the US ambassador informed the international body that it set “a different path in the area for the conflicting parties and all the inhabitants of the territory alike”.

Compromise Phrasing on Independence

Addition of mentions to an independent Palestine was the trade-off the America offered for backing from the Arab states, who are likely to supply security forces for the global force.

“Provisional steps that we embark on today must be implemented in following international law and respecting Palestinian sovereignty,” James Kariuki affirmed.

Israeli Resistance Remains

However, on the brink of the resolution approval, PM the Israeli leader reaffirmed his cabinet's firm resistance to the formation of a Palestinian state, casting doubt on whether Tel Aviv will accept the enactment of the internationally endorsed measures.

Main Elements of the Resolution

  • Prompt removal of existing limitations on relief supplies into the strip
  • Establishment of an international stabilisation force
  • Moves towards reconstruction and a potential “route to Palestinian sovereignty and sovereignty”

Vague Language and Conditions

The inclusion to independence was a compromise addition to an initial US draft which did not mention it. But the wording is vague and contingent, stating only that once the Palestinian leadership has reformed itself and the reconstruction of the territory is advancing, “the circumstances may finally be in place for a feasible course to Palestinian self-determination and statehood.”

Worldwide Feedback

The phrasing fell far short of the firm commitment to the building of a Palestinian state next to Israel requested by Arab countries, as well as European delegates, but in statements to the chamber after the decision, representatives from those states said they were willing to endorse the agreement in the interests of prolonging the current truce and swift steps to assist and secure the millions of Palestinians in the strip.

“We has finally decided to endorse of this resolution, a resolution that we support its primary aim, namely the preservation of the ceasefire and the creation of conditions allowing the Palestinian population to assert their immeasurable rights to sovereignty and sovereignty,” Amar Bendjama announced.

Practical Difficulties

This measure provides general supervisory power to a “board of peace” headed by Donald Trump, but of undefined composition. This committee has to inform the United Nations but it is not bound by the wishes of the UN or by the Palestinian leadership.

Additionally, it requires the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic committee that is expected to manage daily administration of the Gaza Strip and the delivery of services, but it is highly uncertain who would be involved.

Security Force Mandate

The mandate of the global force gives it authority to disarm and dismantle fighting factions in Gaza, but it is quite ambiguous that potential participating nations would consent to face such organizations. Not a single nation has to date pledged to sending peacekeepers.

Moreover the criteria for modification of Palestinian leadership, the precondition towards moves to a sovereign Palestinian, have been vague.

European diplomats said they considered it urgent that the identities of the specialized group to provide utilities was agreed as promptly.
