The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
