Pacific Bluefin Tuna Commands Historic Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates outlets across the country and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds good luck," commented the company president, a notable participant at the annual January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."
This latest acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record another time.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.
The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi chains immediately after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so lucky as the year starts," remarked one happy customer.
