The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
